Workshops and Clinics

I have created my workshops to fill certain focal niches, rather than to duplicate the numerous classes that are taught by so many other instructors. I usually book and conduct these workshops—as well as lectures and demonstrations—through art associations and societies, major retail art suppliers and similar organizations.

Flesh Tones Clinic

Likeness Clinic

"The Human Palette" © This workshop for the portrait and figure artist, focuses on the critical skill of rendering life-like flesh tones in a variety of painting techniques.

(A Drawing Class)
The success or failure of a portrait hinges upon the accuracy of the model's face.  In this workshop I teach you how to fine-tune your portraits and capture a true-to-life likeness.

TROMP L’OEIL STILL LIFE

LIFE DRAWING FOR THE PORTRAIT ARTIST

Tromp l’oeil
is a French word that means "deceive the eye," and is a technique that creates an imagery so convincing that it looks like the real thing. The primary focus in this workshop is the art of creating convincing tromp l’oeil textures. This art form requires a host of unconventional painting techniques, but is really quite easy to do.

Study the basic human form
the way you see it every day, and the way you paint it in your portraits. This life-drawing workshop focuses on the clothed human form. Rather than live models, I use the same life-size, realistic mannequins that you see in the high-end fashion stores. These figures never waiver in their poses, and never need to take breaks. I also use multiple figures. Thus, you can pace your drawings according to your own need—and not for the model or the other members of the class.

ALLA PRIMA
PORTRAIT PAINTING

SPEED-SKETCHING PEOPLE

ONE-SITTING  PORTRAIT.
The word "alla prima" is Italian for "at the beginning".  Also called "premier coup" (French for "first stroke"). This is the technique of painting a head study in oils within a single sitting. To reduce your risk of failure—and thereby lessen your fear of failure—I teach this workshop with the more easily corrected heat-set oils

The World is Your Model Stand.
In this workshop I teach you how to draw people who are not posing for you, and to do so very rapidly. I also teach you how to be stealthy, and thus avoid detection by the people that you are sketching. This has been my most popular workshop.

Any of these workshop subjects can be expanded or combined. I have a Master of Arts degree in Art History, and lecture on the history of portraiture and the human figure in art.

I am presently booking workshops in Speed-Sketching People, and in the Likeness and Flesh Tone clinics. If you would like to schedule or attend one of my workshops or lectures—or if you would like to commission a portrait—you may E-mail me via the contact button below.
